HERITAGE
~
At T. R. White & Son Ltd, we proudly continue a long-standing tradition of British gunmaking excellence. Founded by master gunmaker Tony White in Staffordshire, the company was born out of a deep passion for crafting fine sporting shotguns using time-honoured methods. Tony began his career apprenticing at W&C Scott and went on to refine his skills with the prestigious Holland & Holland group. His expertise in stocking and finishing laid the foundation for a business built on precision, integrity, and craftsmanship.
In the Beginning...
~
From its earliest days, the company has focused on producing bespoke British shotguns of the highest quality. With the arrival of Tony’s mentor, Ted -a veteran craftsman from firms like Webley & Scott and Westley Richards, the team deepened its collective experience and commitment to tradition. Together, Tony and Ted developed technical innovations, including a patented intercepting sear design that remains a hallmark of their engineering excellence.
As the business grew, T. R. White moved premises to Oakedge Shooting Ground (formerly Shugborough Shooting School owned by the late Earl of Lichfield). This partnership symbolised more than just location; it reflected the shared values of heritage, community, and precision shooting. Over the years, the Earl became both a loyal customer and personal friend to Tony.
The Legacy continued
~
The legacy continued into the next generation when Tony’s son, Matthew White, joined the trade after completing his apprenticeship with Holland & Holland in London. Specialising in chequering, oil finishing, and regulation, Matthew brought fresh energy and modern expertise to the family firm. His work has been widely praised, earning him recognition that included the honour of shooting at the Sandringham Estate with the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
With Matthew’s leadership and vision, the company evolved into T. R. White & Son Ltd, reflecting a new era while staying true to its roots. The firm welcomed a new apprentice… Sam Garfield. Now 5 years on he is becoming a true journeyman and excelling in his skills, a true asset of T.R.White & Son Ltd.
Expanding the Company
~
Expanding the company even more, Mark Wallin joined the team, bringing with him many years of experience and knowledge from his family business, York & Wallin, which dates back to 1975.
As a 2nd generation craftsman, Mark has built a reputation for producing some of the finest locks and springs in the country. He continues to use traditional methods, including hand-forging springs, making him a true expert in his field.
The journey continues

Still keeping with the family-run tradition. Tony’s daughter Charlotte has also joined the company, further strengthening the family legacy.
